Indeed, all our present laws reveal a collective moral character entwined within the legal system. Our conflicts are rarely about contradicting this truth.
Rather, the rivalry becomes our social and ethical standards concerning WHOSE MORALITY may be established as normative.
What people get to say their versions of moral behavior are correct?
What is the standard by which they judge rightness and wrongness?
Someone then is always inflicting their version of morality upon another. It is a two-edged sword.
All human behavior has a source for its branding of good vs.evil. Why, for example, is there a law of equity that disallows very wealthy people to buy their way into a college, bypassing stringent academic standards? Because somewhere along the way, humans decided that CHEATING was immoral.
Bernie Madoff revealed just how moral and indignant we can become when legal and immoral shake hands as if to play nicely together.
As a culture, we have a general consensus that PUNISHMENT must be levied upon those who act immorally. Retribution is a theological truth and a generic reality for all civilized societies.
When universally immoral human behaviors (theft, slander, rape, murder, same-sex marriage, slavery, homosexuality, pedophilia, incest, etc.) are justified, then LEGISLATION OF MORALITY IS INDEED BEING EXERCISED.
We do well to remember that morality is distinct from law. When immoral is presented as legal, and when truth is presented as lie, the immoral deed remains in the conscience as foe no matter the legal proclamation, no matter the parades or colorful flags.
Morality can and must be legislated.
SO THEN, WHO HAS THIS MORALITY THING DOWN AND CORRECT?
Secular Humanists and “non-religious but spiritual” people are making their opinions loud and clear but they are just that, “opinions”. The weakness of these movements is the diversity of philosophy reducing them to no diversity without backlash and loss of free speech.
If there is a common thread in that universe, it would be–“Leave us alone and stop restricting us with your beliefs.” They say this to each other and to those without, so much so that they become angry, fearful and anxious. They are like children with no parent who cares enough to say “NO”!
Religious people, including Islamist. America remains a very religious country. The Freedom of Religion” clause invites all religious people who want to worship in peace. America is pluralistic in this sense.
Religious people are those who believe in a god who is moral.
Religious people seek to appease their god by acting and behaving as good little girls and boys.
Religious people can be quite extreme in their adherence to their god’s demands.
If, for example, they cannot go to their religions “heaven” when they die without___________________________________, then expect some amazing devotion. And if they____________________________________________ as an act of faithfulness, they will receive____________________________________________ from their god.
Watch out for religious zealots where heaven and rewards are the motivation for morality!!!
WHAT ABOUT CHRISTIANS AND CHRISTIANITY?
Christianity is different from religions of the world.
In every case of religion, the follower must become good enough for their god by performing religious duties and acts of attrition. This is why on the outside they can appear to be very religious, moral and upright. They can and will perform at very high standards.
Religion is mankind working hard to appease god by their behaviours. When they die their deeds, good and bad, will be on a scale.
Study the Egyptian Religions and gods. “The Feather of Truth”
THE ‘HEART’ OF THE SOUL WAS HANDED OVER TO OSIRIS WHO PLACED IT ON A GREAT GOLDEN SCALE BALANCED AGAINST THE WHITE FEATHER OF MA’AT.
THE FEATHER OF TRUTH
Just as in Islam, if the scale leans more to evil than good, then they missed the mark and failed in this life to measure up to their god Allah.
Christianity is wholly distinct from religion.
Where Religion is man reaching up to a god through his own deeds and attempts at moral behavior, Christianity is God reaching down to sinful man, providing a salvation and redemption he could never earn or deserve. (If he could, then Christs’ death and sacrifice was in vain)
The Christian is never allowed to work for God until he or she become a Child of God. Works and good deeds for the Christian are a Post-Conversion dimension of their discipleship. They do not work or remain faithful to become a Christian–rather BECAUSE THEY were newly born in Christ, having personally received Him into their hearts.
This verse in the bible reveals how God accepts sinful people who could never earn or deserve His love. This is called Grace!
“Money paid to workers isn’t a gift. It is something they earn by working. 5 But you cannot make God accept you because of something you do. God accepts sinners only because they have faith in him.” Romans 4:4
THE CHRISTIAN ACTS MORAL BECAUSE THERE IS A MORAL CHRIST WITHIN.
THIS IS HOW GOD LEGISLATES MORALITY FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM
Romans 5:1-11 repeats the theme:
What It Means To Be Acceptable to God
5 By faith we have been made acceptable to God. And now, because of our Lord Jesus Christ, we live at peace with God. 2 Christ has also introduced us to God’s undeserved kindness on which we take our stand. So we are happy, as we look forward to sharing in the glory of God. 3 But that’s not all! We gladly suffer, because we know that suffering helps us to endure. 4 And endurance builds character, which gives us a hope 5 that will never disappoint us. All of this happens because God has given us the Holy Spirit, who fills our hearts with his love.
6 Christ died for us at a time when we were helpless and sinful. 7 No one is really willing to die for an honest person, though someone might be willing to die for a truly good person. 8 But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful.
9 But there is more! Now that God has accepted us because Christ sacrificed his life’s blood, we will also be kept safe from God’s anger. 10 Even when we were God’s enemies, he made peace with us, because his Son died for us. Yet something even greater than friendship is ours. Now that we are at peace with God, we will be saved by his Son’s life. 11 And in addition to everything else, we are happy because God sent our Lord Jesus Christ to make peace with us.”
Heaven for the Christian is nothing they worked for, earned or deserved because of their moral exploits.
Heaven is a home prepared for them by a Savior whose love knows no end.
“Jesus said to his disciples, “Don’t be worried! Have faith in God and have faith in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I wouldn’t tell you this, unless it was true. I am going there to prepare a place for each of you. 3 After I have done this, I will come back and take you with me. Then we will be together. 4 You know the way to where I am going.”
5 Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t even know where you are going! How can we know the way?”
6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life!” Jesus answered. “Without me, no one can go to the Father. 7 If you had known me, you would have known the Father. But from now on, you do know him, and you have seen him.”” John 14:1-7
